County outlines plan for larger ARPA‑funded mobile health unit; delivery expected Feb. 2026

Deputy DSS operations lead Anne Marie provided details about a larger mobile unit purchased in February 2023 and currently under construction in Matthews. The county used ARPA funds to purchase the unit and staff said the total cost is $730,000; delivery is scheduled for February 2026 and planners envision using the vehicle as a mobile regional center for extended deployments to food banks, shelters, schools and other sites.
"The total cost is $730,000," Anne Marie said, and she described the unit as a one‑room clinical/eligibility space with capacity to perform benefit determinations on site, support mass‑care responses and partner with emergency management for command‑post uses. County staff have begun training drivers and 11 employees already obtained CDLs; governance, staffing and logistics templates are being drafted to prioritize deployment and to identify which events will justify the larger unit versus the smaller Wake Wheels minibus.
Commissioners praised the approach and asked about dental services and behavioral health uses; staff said nothing is off the table but legal/contracting issues may shape deployments to school grounds and other partner sites. The mobile unit plan remains in the planning phase with further community engagement anticipated to refine operating models.
