Public Health Director Rebecca Kauffman described the Wake Wheels for Health minibus — purchased during the COVID response and repurposed to deliver broad public health services — and said it has reached about 300 residents since launch.
"Up to date, we've served around 300 residents on the bus," Kauffman said, and she listed common services provided at events: vaccines, HIV/syphilis/Hep C testing, car‑seat checks, health screenings, community health worker navigation and child health education. The minibus has visited community fairs, back‑to‑school vaccination events and other neighborhood outreach opportunities; residents can request the bus for events via a QR-coded interest form.
Kauffman said the minibus helps the department showcase services and reach residents who might not come to regional centers, and that staff coordination and outreach have been important to its early success. County commissioners praised the outreach approach and asked about expanding dental and preventive services on the bus.
