Massengill said modest improvements in revenue projections allowed the county to restore some funding, including additional support for the sheriff’s office—citing a proposal for new AI-assisted emergency technology—and a slight increase for the school division, while still requiring “over a million dollars in internal cuts.” He emphasized the need for caution around revenue assumptions and the ongoing process of budget review.
Massengill used his remarks to highlight emergency communications and animal control staff, calling emergency dispatchers the true “first responders,” and describing animal control’s role in public health and safety. He also noted the county had implemented a temporary countywide burn ban due to extremely dry conditions and that enforcement would begin with warnings before fines.
Next steps: the board will hold the advertised public hearing on April 28 and is scheduled to vote on the FY27 budget on May 5.
