Board approves loan for landfill compactor repair; director reports DNR review supports expansion monitorability
Summary
The county approved a general‑fund loan to repair a landfill compactor engine (estimate just over $90,000), amended repayment language to allow repayment from future revenues or liquidation proceeds, and heard that DNR and geological reviewers found the expansion site monitorable and relatively stable.

The county board approved an amended resolution authorizing a general‑fund loan to the Solid Waste Department to rebuild the engine in the newest compactor after the machine’s engine smoked and was deemed totaled. Solid Waste Director Stacy Sanborn told the board the Miller Bradford estimate to rebuild the engine was “just over $90,000” and that the compactor (purchased last spring for $148,500) is required to operate the landfill.
Board members debated repayment mechanics. Supervisors sought clarity that loan repayment could come from the department’s future revenues or, if the landfill closes, from liquidation of assets; the amendment adding liquidation language was approved before the full resolution passed. Sanborn also briefed the board on the landfill feasibility study addendum and said the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey and DNR hydrogeologists reviewed stability and monitorability concerns and found the site generally favorable — bedrock depth was cited (>40 feet) and monitoring wells were installed as part of the study.
