Residents urge county to partner with municipalities on large data-center zoning and water planning

A resident delegation representing New Hill, Apex and nearby communities urged Wake County to take a regional approach to regulate large data centers after a public comment about a 300-megawatt proposal near Sheeran Harris in New Hill. Michelle Hoffner said the proposed facility, less than two miles from some homes, raises concerns about power and water demands, groundwater contamination risk, air, noise and light pollution, and fire hazards related to large battery storage.
Hoffner asked that Wake County planning staff partner with municipal governments to draft zoning ordinances specific to large-scale data centers and to integrate data-center impacts into county water planning. Speakers acknowledged the current application sits with the Town of Apex but said county-level coordination is needed to protect residents and regional resources.
