Commissioners approve IT purchasing policy, defer major projects to separate vote

The Coryell County Commissioners Court approved an information-technology purchasing policy after commissioners said the policy should be considered independently from funding for major IT projects. Commissioner Matthews moved to approve the policy; Commissioner Weddle seconded and the motion carried.

The vote followed a presentation laying out near-term IT risks, including expiring firewalls and computers approaching end of life. Sam, speaking for county IT staff, warned that network- and data-center-level failures posed the most serious compliance risks. "I had, penciled in based on our conversation at an IT meeting that that would be discussed," Sam said, noting the larger computer-replacement effort would be a longer lead-time procurement.

Commissioners said they would separate policy adoption from project funding so the court could address the immediate policy framework now and budget questions later. Matthews described the policy motion as focused on purchasing rules and not on approving the proposed IT capital projects now under discussion.
