McKinney to demolish City Hall and Development Services; downtown parking to drop for months

The council was told demolition of the old City Hall and Development Services building will begin in early April after the council awarded the demolition contract March 17.
"We anticipate it will be about a 3 month, 3 month project," Michael Quint said, adding that asbestos abatement must occur before full demolition proceeds. Quint warned that both lots will be unavailable during demolition and the city will be "down a couple of 100 spaces" while work is underway.
Quint said some grading will be necessary because of topography differences on the lots, and that sections of the first row of City Hall parking could be affected when a basement is removed. He reiterated staff will try to preserve as much parking access as possible and will direct traffic and pedestrian access during the work.
The historic marker currently sited near the City Hall parcel will be removed for demolition to avoid damage and later reinstalled in a new right-of-way location at the corner of Tennessee, Quint said.
