Board completes canvass of April special referendum; registrar says state Supreme Court later overturned election

The Shenandoah County Electoral Board completed the canvass of the April 21 special referendum, reviewed Statements of Results from 14 satellite precincts and processed provisional ballots. The board recorded 101 provisional ballots received — 74 same-day registration provisional ballots and 27 other provisional ballots — of which 99 were accepted and 2 were rejected; official documentation was completed, and the Abstract in VERIS was signed and sealed by Chair Jacob French, Vice Chair Beverly Harrison and Secretary Gayle Wellard.
General Registrar Lisa W. McDonald told the board that, despite the local canvass and documentation, the Virginia Supreme Court later overturned the special election in a 4–3 decision because early voting began fewer than 90 days after notice. McDonald said the office is preparing supply orders and reimbursement paperwork and has submitted required post-election documentation to the registrar’s files.
