Commission flags fire, HAZMAT and environmental risks as part of BESS review

Members asked staff to gather technical input from HAZMAT, local fire officials and state resource agencies to address containment, fire standards, sinkhole risk and emergency response for battery energy storage systems.
During discussion of the BESS ordinance amendment, commissioners singled out fire safety, hazardous-materials response and environmental risks as priorities for technical review. Vice Chair Candi Brandau Larson specifically raised fire safety and suggested input from Mason City HAZMAT personnel, including Aaron Beemer; members also noted local fire officials such as Sam Deverell have been increasing their knowledge of BESS-related issues.
Commissioners identified containment of potential releases and emergency response as topics for future discussion and suggested consulting the National Fire Protection Association guidance now under development. Zoning Administrator Jessy Willadsen said Robbins would gather additional information on fire and HAZMAT topics and return with that technical input for the commission’s consideration.
