County seeks outside prosecutorial assistance in State v. Michael Paul Brown

County Attorney Morgan Smith asked the Commission to authorize the Attorney General's Prosecution Services Bureau to serve as Special Deputy County Attorney and provide co-counsel on State v. Michael Paul Brown. Smith said the case involves complex litigation and possible questions of mental capacity, and that outside assistance was appropriate given limited county prosecutorial resources.
Commissioner Ed Beaudette voiced support, saying earlier assistance would have been helpful given case complexity. CEO Bill Everett supported providing Ms. Smith the resources she requested. The Commission approved Resolution No. 26-12 authorizing the appointment and noting that the county will be responsible for trial-related costs while the bureau's internal staffing decisions remain with the Attorney General's Office.
County Attorney Smith said she expects two attorneys from the bureau to assist initially and that appointment of the bureau as a whole will allow continuity if staffing changes.
