Committee approves $82,768 in ARPA funds to upsize Juvenile Center fire-suppression line

The Berrien County Administration Committee on April 16 approved a one-time $82,768 transfer of ARPA funds to cover additional water-line work needed for the Juvenile Center's fire suppression system.
Don Trail of Building & Grounds told the committee the Juvenile Center project was originally estimated at $5.3 million but returned no single comprehensive bids, so it was rebid in discrete components. "Peerless Construction was awarded the fire suppression element at $1.14 million," Trail said, and because the current water main is 4 inches and suppression requires a 6-inch line, relocating and upsizing the line adds $82,768, with ARPA funds covering the cost. The committee approved the additional funding on a motion by Sharon Tyler, supported by Vice Chair David Vollrath.
Trail said he has completed a bid waiver and will present it to the Finance Committee. He also reported acting as general contractor for the South County Health Department work, which remains on track for early July, and that updated plans from Bacchiocchi for Administration building security should reduce that project's budget to about $450,000.
The committee recorded the motion approving the ARPA transfer as carried. The vote was taken during the Building & Grounds report and no recorded dissent was noted in the minutes.
