Resident urges safety upgrades at Route 66 North and Sheffield Drive; supervisors cite FHWA rules and $1,000 flashing sign option
Summary
Resident Eric Hageder raised concerns about drivers running the red light at Route 66 North and Sheffield Drive; Supervisor Mark Szewcow said "strobe lights are no longer accepted by the Federal Highway Administration" and offered a blinking 'signal ahead' sign option for about $1,000. The board will consider the option while awarding the Route 66 signal upgrades.

During public discussion of the Route 66 signal project, resident Eric Hageder asked whether a strobe light could be installed to alert drivers approaching the red light at Route 66 North and Sheffield Drive. Supervisor Mark Szewcow responded that "strobe lights are no longer accepted by the Federal Highway Administration." He said a "signal ahead" sign that blinks red when the light is about to turn red can be installed as an alternative for an additional $1,000 and noted that the single bid came in under the grant amount, making the option feasible.
Supervisor Todd Paulich also recommended a pavement-marking change, saying the far-right lane on Route 66 North (Sherridan ramping to Route 22) should be marked in the center of the lane rather than toward the left. The board recorded the discussion and will consider those safety options when it reviews bids and awards at the April 15, 2026 meeting.
