Residents, trustees urge Shenandoah County to fund planned library expansion

Farimah Schuerman of Quicksburg and several library trustees asked the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors on April 6 to include a proposed library expansion in the FY27 budget. Schuerman said the expansion is a continuing community need and trustees have advanced planning work.
Brad Hitde of Woodstock, a member of the library board, said the project has strong community support and that “the library system has spent $200k on designs already and they need to commit to the project to get donor support.” David Frederick, a longtime library volunteer, added that the libraries “are essential to community functions and programs are available for all ages,” and said current facilities lack space to meet demand.
Library trustees who spoke said the county’s financial commitment is needed to unlock donations. Suzanne Montgomery, identified as chair of the library board of trustees, said detailed designs are complete and trustees are ready to begin fundraising if the County provides budget support. Joan Anderson urged additional space for archives, meeting rooms and staff offices.
The public hearing record shows no decision was made at the meeting; Chairman Tim Taylot said action on the proposed budgets and tax rates is expected at a scheduled board meeting on April 14, 2026, following a budget work session on April 9, 2026.
