Selectboard asks state to review shoreline tree clearing on West Shore Road

The Isle La Motte Selectboard voted Dec. 4 to ask the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to review recent shoreline tree cutting on West Shore Road after residents said trees planted to control erosion were removed.
Michele and Peter Murray told the board that a resident had cleared trees in the town right-of-way on the shoreline side, including vegetation planted more than a decade ago to control erosion. Chair Peter Brzozowy said he visited the property and informed the owner of the alleged violation. A motion by Cary Sandvig to authorize Selectboard member Mary‑Catherine Graziano to contact the DEC for guidance was seconded by Joe Deller and passed unanimously. The board requested current photographs of the site and any available pre‑clearing photos; the matter will be on the next agenda pending the DEC response.
The minutes record that the removal may violate the Vermont Shoreland Protection Act; the Selectboard did not take enforcement action at the meeting and instead sought the DEC’s review. The board also directed that additional shoreline clearing be prevented until the issue is resolved.
