Nursing Home Comptroller Heather Loucks reported she reviewed EMS billing after joining county work at the end of January and flagged problems: the billing company submitted 190 tickets so far, billed the wrong insurance subscriber in some cases, and failed to verify insurance information consistently. Loucks told the Committee she believes the work could be handled more effectively in-house and that securing appropriate accreditations and certifications would support that change; she also noted the current vendor is out of state and the contract expires mid-next year.
EMS Director Jim Lee raised a separate operational proposal to improve supervisory coverage. He said gaps in supervisory coverage occurred roughly 20% of the time in the final two months of last year and proposed abolishing four paramedic positions and creating four supervisory positions, which would cost approximately $11,300 for the remainder of 2026 if implemented around May 1. Lee provided an informational sheet to Committee members and said he and the Nursing Home Comptroller will continue to provide updates as the review proceeds.
