Astoria library renovation ahead of schedule; $500,000 NEH challenge grant secured

Library staff told the committee the renovation project is progressing faster than anticipated and remains within budget. The library director reported the construction schedule is roughly 7% ahead and that about $8 million has been spent to date with an additional $2.5 million budgeted next fiscal year to complete the work. "We should be, I think, around October, you'll have a brand new library to the community," the director said.

The committee was asked to approve a one-time increase to the library materials budget to prepare an opening-day collection; staff described $108,000 allocated to materials with $30,000 from prior-year savings and about $47,000 coming from trust funds. The director also said the library secured a $500,000 3:1 matching challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to build a basement humanities center (archives and program space). Committee members asked whether operating costs in the new facility would change; staff said energy-efficiency improvements may reduce some operating costs but janitorial costs will likely rise because of increased square footage.

The budget committee tentatively approved the library budget with the materials allocation and noted staff will monitor operations after the move and evaluate staffing needs in the next budget cycle.
