The assembly previewed a public hearing and pending ordinance to create an area-wide marijuana retail sales tax and establish a community well-being fund, with voter approval required. Caroline Roberts said she supports placing the tax on the fall ballot for community decision-making: “I just I still support this going to the ballot in the fall for the community to decide, not us, obviously, and see if that's something they wanna see implemented.”
Members discussed policy goals—diversifying revenue and potentially reducing the borough’s reliance on general fund dollars—and debated whether revenue should be dedicated to reducing the mill rate or kept as a specific fund. Clerk Nova explained that at next week’s meeting the motion will be moved to adopt and then there will be a secondary motion to amend by substitution to incorporate the ordinance’s definition of marijuana into the text; that amendment will be included in the guidelines and packet materials for the regular meeting.
