Islands Pickleball Association wins Selectboard support for tree‑planting grant at Veterans Park

The Isle La Motte Selectboard on Dec. 18 voted to support a tree‑planting grant application being advanced by the Islands Pickleball Association (IPA) to plant trees at Veterans Park.
Susan Dunning, representing the IPA, described a revised grant plan that would place four large trees around the pickleball and basketball court area and commit the IPA to two years of tree maintenance as a requirement of the grant. Board members discussed species, root impacts, insect and pruning concerns, and the long‑term size of the proposed trees.
Member Mary‑Catherine Graziano will work with the Recreation Department to recommend tree types for the grant application, and the Recreation Department will prepare a town letter of support for the IPA to include with its submission. The motion to support the project passed with all in favor except Member Pat Treckman, who abstained. If the grant is awarded, work must be completed by summer 2026.
The Selectboard said ultimate placement of the trees will be determined in the context of planned park projects to avoid conflicts with other improvements.
