Jackson County forwards $480,000 truck appropriations to Council; commissioners debate procurement strategy

Jackson County commissioners agreed May 6 to forward two additional appropriation requests to County Council to address ongoing dump truck repair costs. Auditor Melissa Gray said the requests — $100,000 to Local Roads & Streets Fund 1169 for major repairs and $380,000 to County Highway Fund 1176 for two new dump trucks — will be presented to the Council on May 20, 2026.
Gray cited Superintendent Ault’s earlier report showing repair cost patterns, noting costs rise substantially after about 10 years of service. Commissioner Andrew Stauffer supported standardizing the fleet to allow interchangeable parts and diagnostics. Commissioner Drew Markel expressed concern about relying on cooperative vendors such as Sourcewell, while Commissioners Storey and Stauffer favored issuing a detailed RFP to seek better bids.
The board voted 3-0 to move the appropriation requests to County Council. Commissioner Storey also recommended connecting Superintendent Ault with other Southern Indiana highway officials; he specifically suggested outreach to Kevin Russell, Harrison County Highway Director, to inform procurement and maintenance planning.
