Planning board notes Superfund/arsenic layer requires Homestake review for some building permits

A commissioner asked whether the county’s Superfund/arsenic map affects plats and building permits. Planning staff said the Superfund layer predates current staff and serves as a screening tool: any application within the mapped area must be routed to Homestake for soil sampling and additional review, and that process can effectively bar new residential construction where ground disturbance would expose arsenic-bearing soils.
"If anybody comes in within that area and wants to build a barn or a house or anything, I have to go to Homestake with it," staff said, noting that Homestake helps applicants with soil sampling and an extended review process. Staff said the county typically will not approve residential building in mapped arsenic areas unless Homestake's testing and mitigation allow it.
