Council approves budgeted purchase of police cruiser as fleet replacements reviewed

The Town of Nutter Fort council voted unanimously June 11 to proceed with a budgeted purchase of one police cruiser while the department continues evaluating replacement of two overdue vehicles.
Police Chief Ron Godwin told the council the department's 2012 and 2014 cruisers are overdue for replacement and that "there is money already set aside in the budget for at least one new replacement." Chief Godwin said acquisition and outfitting will take months and that hiring outcomes will influence if and when additional vehicles are ordered. "Charlene Louk moved to proceed with the already budgeted purchase of the cruiser, with a second by Karen Phillips. The motion carried unanimously," the minutes record.
Chief Godwin also said the department is updating internal policies for tasers, body cameras and evidence procedures. The council did not set a specific delivery date for the new cruiser; Chief Godwin said procurement and equipment installation will be multi-month steps to follow.
