Council approves pay ordinance for 10 new jail confinement officers to staff new facility

Sheriff Troy Hershberger told the Council the county needs more confinement officers to staff the new jail and to reach training readiness. He said 166 of 172 currently budgeted positions are filled; six hires were imminent and four others were in final processing. "When we hire somebody, it takes a good solid 90 days to get them trained and a good 180 days before they really are comfortable and working on their own," Hershberger said, explaining the Council should authorize additional positions now to meet a 23-month move-in timeline for the new facility.
Councilmember Tom Harris moved the salary ordinance establishing pay for 10 civilian confinement officers at $52,662 per year (classification C-3-1). The motion passed by voice vote, recorded as 6-0-1. Personnel director Tom DeRose told council recruiting volume is strong and the department is working to speed processing of applicants and background steps such as polygraphs and medical screening.
Council members discussed long-term operating costs and the sheriff confirmed the council would fund the positions as part of next year’s budgeted personnel costs once the salary ordinance is in place.
