Allen County Highway Director Bill Hartman explained and the Board of Commissioners approved an unofficial detour route for an InDOT bridge deck overlay project on April 3, 2026.
Hartman said the unofficial route—Halter to St. Joe Road to Mayhew Road to North Clinton Street and back to SR1—was preferred when shorter and more desirable detours exist. He stated that the Indiana Department of Transportation (InDOT) will reimburse the county for any wear or damage to county roads caused by increased traffic during the construction period. Commissioner Ronald W. Turpin moved approval; Commissioner Therese M. Brown seconded and the motion carried 3-0.
The board's action authorizes the county to accept the unofficial detour arrangement and seek reimbursement under state practice for such projects.
