At a meeting on Oct. 28 the Horry County Historic Preservation Commission elected Ben Burrows as chair and Pat Miller as vice chair, approving both nominations by voice vote.
After the vote the presiding officer said, "I will say that, I'm happy to serve as your chairman," and described relying on other commissioners to represent the commission at public events when needed. Commissioners nominated and seconded both officers in a short process that the panel advanced early in the agenda.
The election clears the way for the commission's schedule of hearings and outreach this winter. Commissioners and staff discussed expectations for representing the panel at award ceremonies and site events; the new chair warned he may be unable to attend every event because of full-time employment and asked other members to step in when needed.
The commission also approved three sets of minutes from April, August and September by separate motions and voice votes before moving to project updates. The meeting adjourned after routine business and scheduling items were set for the Nov. 18 meeting.
Next steps: the commission will continue its regular meeting schedule with the newly elected officers presiding.
