Fort Myers' IT director briefed council on the city's project to migrate to a .gov domain to reduce spoofing risks and provide a more trusted official presence online.
Rich Calkins explained the city applied for and now hosts fortmyers.gov (mirrored with cityftmyers.com) and plans to make fortmyers.gov the official domain with a target date of Jan. 27. Staff recommended that employees and departments begin placing fortmyers.gov on new marketing materials and noted that email addresses will move to the dot‑gov domain over time. "Fortmyers.gov just makes sense for us," the IT director said, describing both security and branding benefits and a phased transition to avoid unnecessary replacement of long‑run printed materials.
Council members asked about technical and communication steps, QR code use and payment security; staff said QR codes can be used for informational links but will avoid payment QR usage due to theft risk. The city will run internal testing, update links and provide public messaging about the migration.
