Fort Myers moves to CRS Class 6; homeowners to get lower NFIP premiums

Community Development staff told council the city’s effort to improve its National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System (CRS) score succeeded this cycle, with an ISO verification recommending an upgrade from Class 9 to Class 6.
Steve Eldon, the Community Development Director, outlined the CRS program and said the verification report credited the city with 2,235 points — enough to recommend the jump to Class 6 and deliver roughly a 20% discount on flood insurance premiums to eligible policyholders. Eldon noted the city rejoined the program after an earlier removal and described specific creditable activities (public information, mapping, flood damage reduction, warning and response) that contributed to the score. He said staff will keep pursuing additional activities to work toward a Class 5 rating.
Council members asked whether the discount will appear automatically on insurance renewals; staff said insurers were notified and the change should take effect on policies renewing after Oct. 1, with follow‑up steps if residents do not see the reduction.
