Mayor Kevin B. Anderson opened the Nov. 18 Fort Myers City Council meeting by calling it a ‘‘historic event’’ and presenting a proclamation recognizing Johnny W. Streets Jr. for more than 50 years of public service. Anderson read the proclamation and declared Nov. 18, 2024 as Johnny W. Streets Jr. Day in Fort Myers.
Johnny W. Streets Jr., who served with the Fort Myers Police Department and in several housing authority roles before his council tenure, received remarks and gifts from his colleagues. Streets responded with gratitude, saying, “But, this is my city. I love it.” Council members and staff praised his decades of service and presented commemorative items and a photo opportunity.
The council also administered oaths of office. A new council member recited the oath to support and defend the U.S. and Florida constitutions and to faithfully perform the duties of the council seat. Diana Geraldo was sworn in as the Ward 2 council member and spoke of her commitment to represent her community, describing her background as a former city employee and local volunteer. A separate oath was administered for a Ward 6 council seat.
The ceremonial portion included a brief recess for photographs and a video tribute. The mayor noted an honorary street‑naming to come later in the agenda and thanked the public and staff for organizing the recognition.
