USD 239 superintendent proposes student-run projects at John Henry building

Dr. Curtis Stevens, superintendent of USD 239, told the Ottawa County Commission he would like students to take on small projects inside the John Henry building as a way to connect them with local history and skills development. "When kids have worked in something, they have an investment into that project," Stevens said, and he described the planned collaboration as a neutral, catalytic space involving the county, the school board, the Ottawa County Community Foundation and the museum board.
Stevens said he will present a draft Memorandum of Understanding to the school board and return to the commission for review if the board concurs. He described starting with a modest pilot — including a newspaper-scanning project with the museum — that can demonstrate success and help secure grant funding for expanded activities. Stevens also noted the district is hosting a twirling competition on March 7 that is expected to bring more than 200 families to the community, which he said could increase visibility for any John Henry programming.
