The Niles City Council approved a Utilities Department electric meter opt-out policy to give customers a formal method and fee schedule should they choose not to participate in the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) upgrade.
Councilmember Jessica Nelson moved and Councilmember Gretchen Bertschy seconded the policy. The roll-call vote recorded a single nay from Councilmember Michael Thompson and the motion carried. Administrator Huff clarified that the recorded fees in the minutes were estimates and that the current proposal did not include fee relief for customers who opt out.
The adopted policy provides the Utilities Department an administrative process to record opt-outs and charge any associated fees; the minutes do not include the final fee schedule or implementation date and note estimated costs only.
