Niles council gives first readings to three marihuana ordinance amendments, including retail-hour change

The Niles City Council introduced three ordinance amendments on first reading on Jan. 13 aimed at changing how local marihuana businesses may transition between license types and at adjusting retail hours.
The council read Ordinance 492, which would allow marihuana microbusinesses to transition to retail and grow licenses; Ordinance 491, which would both allow microbusiness transitions and change retail hours; and Ordinance 488, which would change marihuana retail hours to 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The items were presented as first readings and were not adopted by final vote at the meeting.
Councilmember Michael Thompson thanked the Ordinance Committee during remarks, saying the committee had added “a little more liberty to the people in the marihuana committee.” The public included multiple speakers who supported the proposed changes: Tristan Clark (508 Broadway; Southland Farms) and Andrea Penna-Curran (724 Chippewa; Southland Farms) both spoke in favor of the license transitions, and William Haas, owner of Native Michigan Remedies, also expressed support during public comment.
Because these were first readings, the council did not record final approval or vote tallies for the ordinance text on Jan. 13. The measures will return for subsequent readings before any ordinance is adopted.
