Anamosa City Council held a special session March 24, 2025, at the Anamosa Library and Learning Center to open a public hearing on the proposed fiscal year 2026 property tax levy. The mayor opened the hearing and invited anyone wishing to speak to approach the podium, state their name and address, noting that the council's ability to respond is limited under Iowa law.
A council member explained that a publication and submittal snafu, combined with new state requirements, means the council must hold a second, separate hearing and will give the public two opportunities to attend. The council member said they had "contacted the department of management on Friday" and that staff identified adjustments in the liability and property-and-casualty valuations that allowed the levy to be reduced. The council member said, "We were able to lower it a bit." The member added that they would continue to work over the next week to pursue any further reductions; the exact dollar or rate change was not specified.
The mayor asked whether there were public inquiries and then closed the hearing: "Public hearing is now closed." No votes or formal motions were recorded during the special session, and the meeting was adjourned shortly afterward. The council did not take formal action on the levy at this session; a follow-up meeting was indicated to satisfy state submittal requirements and to provide another public hearing opportunity.
