Mid‑year report: Cudahy CARES distributes kits, expands outreach and plans vending machine

Health Officer Heather Puente and Public Health Specialist Abbie Van Handel presented the Cudahy CARES mid‑year report at the May 7 Board of Health meeting, describing four core strategies and progress under the "Better Ways to Cope" grant. The project timeline is 8/1/2024–12/31/2025.
Staff reported distribution totals and outreach metrics: Naloxone: 150 doses; Fentanyl Test Strips (FTS): 29; Condom packets: 9; Sharps disposal: 161. Outreach activity included 10 community events with roughly 450 people reached to date. Staff said a vending machine to distribute risk‑reduction supplies is in progress with installation estimated for fall 2025.
Puente and Van Handel also described an in‑progress Leave‑Behind Naloxone agreement with the Cudahy Fire Department and said a system to monitor kit use has been completed and implemented in the department's electronic medical records.
