County clerk authorized to destroy older ballots under KSA 25-2708(b); overseers appointed

County clerk Bobby Dryling told the commission he periodically destroys ballots in accordance with KSA 25-2708(b) and asked authorization to destroy a set of earlier ballots that are past the statutory retention period. Dryling identified the ballots proposed for destruction as: the 2024 presidential preference primary election ballot, the 2024 primary election ballot, and the 2025 general city school election ballot. He asked the commission to appoint a Republican and a Democrat to oversee the destruction process and named two individuals for that role during his remarks.
A commissioner moved that the clerk be allowed to destroy those ballots and that Eugene Rupp and Mike Weber be appointed to oversee the process (the clerk earlier referenced Mike Weber and Eugene Brook in introducing the request). The motion was seconded and the commission approved it by voice vote.
Dryling said future destructions will be carried out at the landfill with witnesses present and that the clerk will record the activity in the minutes going forward.
