Ellis County commissioners voted to approve Purchase Order 8007 to buy and install upgraded audio and video systems after the county was awarded an Office of Judicial Administration grant.
Mike Smith, district court administrator for the 23rd Judicial District, told the commission the grant will fund full audio-video solutions in two courtrooms and that "we were awarded in Ellis County a $104,072.85." He said upgrades include microphones, cameras that track speakers, and larger screens (upgraded from 85- to 98-inch displays) to make digital evidence and hybrid Zoom hearings clearer for juries, judges and counsel. Smith said one of the upgraded rooms will allow safer, more direct transfer of inmates from the adjacent jail entrance.
A motion to approve the purchase order was made and seconded on the floor and passed by voice vote. Commissioners said the purchases will be paid up front and reimbursed through the Office of Judicial Administration grant, with any small overage covered from county capital funds as needed. The upgrades are intended to standardize equipment across district courtrooms and improve the technology available for hybrid and digital-evidence proceedings.
