Departments present 2027 budget requests; public transportation sees KDOT increase

County departmental officials presented proposed budgets for 2027 on June 8, citing staff needs, program costs and state funding changes.
Treasurer Karen Callway requested $171,494 (a 3% increase) that includes contracting with a vendor to mail tax statements. County Clerk Abby Amick requested $146,187 (3% increase) and also presented the Elections 2027 budget of $114,140 (a 2.7% decrease), noting the State Voter Registration database fee is expected to double from $4,000 to $8,000 in 2027 and 2028. Public Transportation Program Coordinator Kristin Coon requested $159,172 (an 11% increase) and said KDOT funding approved an additional $13,229 over the prior year. "KDOT funding supports 70% of operations and the County and Rider Fees support the remaining 30%; additionally KDOT funding supports 80% of Administration costs and the County funds the remaining 20%," Coon said. Coon reported 49 new riders so far in 2026 and emphasized maintenance needs for older vehicles averaging about 8,000 miles per month.
Commissioners reviewed the requests; the minutes do not record final appropriation votes during the meeting.
