Board asks designers for alternatives to synthetic-turf hill after PFAS and heat concerns

During the playground follow-up discussion the advisory board asked whether the proposed synthetic-turf hillside could be replaced with alternatives after recent reporting on PFAS in artificial turf and concerns about surface heat. "There's been so much that's come out on the concerns associated with synthetic turf and toxics with PFAS and heat on the plastic turf," a board member said, asking whether alternatives exist. HCM responded that the hillside could be constructed as a poured-in-place mound instead of synthetic turf and that the play-area infill they propose is a natural infill rather than rubber.
Consultants also confirmed some existing play pieces (spinners and freestanding elements) will be salvaged and reused. The board asked HCM to provide comparative costs and lifecycle/health considerations for synthetic turf versus alternatives when they return to the board.
