Council adopts sidewalk maintenance code updates to account for chase drains and homeowner responsibilities

Public Works Director Larry Nemo presented updates to Castle Pines' municipal code addressing sidewalk maintenance and chase drains (the curb-edge drains that collect sump pump discharge). Nemo said legacy neighborhoods sometimes have sump systems that tie into drainage infrastructure; newer developments use chase drains that require cutting and re-pouring small sidewalk sections and homeowner upkeep. "So basically what I'm coming about to support tonight is we're kind of updating the municipal code to read the standards that we would now work with," Nemo said.

Nemo told council that Lennar has agreed to fund a number of chase-drain installations to address resident requests and that the code amendments are intended to reflect current field practice and homeowner notification requirements. No public commenters signed up for the hearing; council thanked staff and the motion to adopt the ordinance on second reading passed unanimously.

Council members asked staff to track individual ADA corner improvements that were raised nearby so they can be addressed under broader ADA work. Staff said those items will be added to the work list for evaluation.
