Council hears explanation of 2% solid-waste increase, stormwater unchanged and 2.4% water/sewer adjustment

Kaplan told the council that residents will see a roughly 2% increase in solid-waste assessments and a 2.4% adjustment in water and sewer rates, while stormwater assessments will remain unchanged at $72 per equivalent residential unit per year.
Kaplan explained the town moved solid-waste service to a Coastal contract and that the agreement allows an annual cost-of-living adjustment tied to a regional CPI; the town applies a franchise and administrative fee and passes rate increases or decreases through to customers. "If the rate goes up, we're passing along to the customer. If the rate drops, we're passing that savings along to the customer," Kaplan said.
Councilmembers asked for clarification because some residents had complained about an increase; Kaplan said the current assessed rate is still lower than it was one to three years ago following the vendor transition.
