Jay County moves forward on chip-and-seal, bridge overlays and sells old excavator

Robert Howell, Jay County Highway superintendent, updated the commissioners on roadwork and equipment. Howell said single seals are complete and approximately 82 miles of chip-and-seal work have been finished this year; crews are addressing soft spots and conversion repairs. Road foreman Spencer Patterson reported a section of 100 W lacked stone beneath the surface and crews are developing a repair plan.
Howell asked to sell a 1996 Badger excavator on Purple Wave; Duane Monroe moved and Doug Horn seconded the sale, which passed unanimously. Commissioners discussed submitting the paving project on 400 S for the Community Crossings Management Grant (CCMG) for FY2026 and planning overlays for bridges #126, #190 and #272 in FY2028; they noted the state reduced CCMG frequency and funding, increasing competitiveness. The county approved a USI contract (after attorney review) to implement other firms related to highway work.
