Volunteer service group faces steep carnival-ride insurance quote; county clarifies liability

Doug Plummer, speaking for the Ottawa County Service Corp, told commissioners that insurers are quoting roughly $19,200 to cover carnival rides this year and that he is having difficulty securing coverage. Plummer said the state requires insurance only during the event but that rising premiums and limited markets make finding coverage difficult.
County Clerk Tammi Cox said she spoke with KCAMP, which confirmed the county's insurance covers the land but not privately operated rides; she said she provided Plummer a list of potential insurers and that the Service Corp is pursuing bids. Commissioners discussed liability and suggested measures such as signage around rides while Plummer researches options and contacts peer counties for additional information.
