County Treasurer Linda Whitten explained that the title holder of Parcel #076-000760636183150 made an online payment on Sept. 30, 2025, that included taxes for multiple counties and later reported the payment to his bank as fraudulent. When the payment was later processed in early October, different counties handled the return payment differently. Van Buren County allowed the late penalty to be charged.
On motion by Supervisor Waugh, seconded by Supervisor House, the board approved not refunding the penalty on the first-half property tax payment; the motion passed with three ayes. The minutes record the parcel identifier and the date the taxes were due (Sept. 1, 2025) but do not list the dollar amount of the penalty or further remediation steps.
The board's action leaves the late penalty in place for this parcel; any refund or additional appeal would require further administrative or legal steps not recorded in the minutes.
