Van Buren County board reviews voting-precinct concerns, tables action to Oct. 13

County Auditor Lisa Plecker brought Ordinance #2022-1 (the ordinance adopting voting precincts for Van Buren County) to the board’s attention after several constituents expressed concerns about distance to polling places and long lines. Plecker provided the board with Iowa Code 49.8(7), which states: "Precinct boundaries may be changed once if the commissioner recommends and the board of supervisors finds that the change will effect a substantial savings in election costs."
The board discussed cost estimates for adding precincts and reviewed alternative voting methods available to voters, including mailed absentee ballots, in-person absentee at the auditor’s office, and satellite voting if petitioned. The board tabled further action until its Oct. 13 meeting to allow for additional information and cost analysis.
