The council approved a variance to permit a new private dock at 416 South Lake Drive that would extend about 400 feet into the Intracoastal to gain sufficient water depth (approximately 3.5 feet at the dock end). Development services staff explained that the proposed width and side setbacks comply with code but the overall dock area (about 1,640 sq ft) exceeds typical limits and therefore required a variance; the applicant provided a water-depth survey to justify the additional length under section 23‑134(a)(2).
Donna Aisham, representing the contractor, told council that neighboring docks extend similar distances (410–420 feet) and that the Army Corps of Engineers had reviewed the shallowness and provided approvals for their work. Planning staff said the Planning Commission had unanimously recommended approval and council members said the request was reasonable in context of the neighborhood. "We're looking to go 400 feet," the contractor said, and the council approved the variance 5–0.
Staff emphasized that the pier and dredging issues require coordination with state and federal permitting and that the variance reflects site-specific depth conditions.
