City updates: water-main rebid, sidewalk delays and pump-station blasting planned

City Administrator Wagner updated the Smithville Board on several capital projects, saying staff has reissued the Church and Mill water-main project for bid because the apparent low bidder and the next low bidder were unable to complete the work on schedule.
Wagner said the Commercial Street sidewalk contractor is making slow progress and struggling to keep staff; the firm's completion date is mid-September and the city will assess liquidated damages if the work is not completed on time. On the 100 and 44th Street pump station, Wagner said crews have excavated a wet well approximately 45 feet deep and will need to remove about 20 feet of rock; limited blasting was planned for Thursday and adjoining property owners have been notified.
Wagner said staff is meeting weekly with contractors and will bring a rebid recommendation to the Aug. 5 board meeting; she also said the city will share progress photos and notices to nearby property owners via social media.
