Board hears maintenance update; Mist custodial hours described as 'not sustainable'

The Vernonia School District received a maintenance update April 9 that flagged unfinished shop electrical work and a need for a machined sink part, and the board heard that Mist Elementary is operating on about 10 custodial/maintenance hours a week.
Maintenance report items were provided in advance and Mark Brown noted the shop electrical drop downs remain uninstalled and a sink requires a custom-machined part. Superintendent Jim Helmen told the board that 10 hours per week at Mist is unsustainable and that administration will examine changes for the next school year; Helmen also noted planned power washing of fences over spring break.
Joanie Jones volunteered to help with power washing; Helmen said decisions about the Maintenance Supervisor vacancy will be part of transition hiring he will assist with prior to departing June 30.
