The Vernonia School District Board of Directors voted unanimously April 9 to appoint members to a superintendent search committee as Superintendent Jim Helmen prepares to leave on June 30.
Consultant Rob Hess of GLS told the board that 14 applications have been received and that more than 100 community responses were submitted to a qualifications survey. Barb Carr will finalize the committee structure and arrange a Finalist Day schedule, the board was told. Helmen said he will assist with hiring a new Business Manager and a Maintenance Supervisor before his departure and will leave other staffing decisions, including the Special Education/Student Services role, for the incoming superintendent.
Board Chair Greg Kintz led the motion to confirm the search committee; the motion passed unanimously with the six members present. The consultant and the board emphasized community input: Hess reported the number of survey responses as evidence of community engagement. The district noted the finalist-day format and committee structure will be set in coming weeks.
