Commission approves bids for Schoonpau and Johnson Canyon road reconstruction

Commissioners approved bid awards June 9 for the Schoonpau Road and Johnson Canyon reconstruction projects and authorized staff to proceed with pre‑construction steps. Roads director Bert Harris said the county received six competing bids and that the low bidder for the combined work was Hale Sand and Gravel; the bid was transcribed in the meeting as "5,000,000, $15,991.40." He said the county will use a 2018 UDOT grant of $1,700,000, $3,000,000 in TRT funds and about $500,000 in fund balance to cover the projects.
Harris described the work as a 2.5‑mile reclamation and paving on Schoonpau Road and a reclamation/paving and lane leveling on Johnson Canyon north of Church Ranch Bridge. "It will start and finish this year," he said, and staff scheduled a pre‑construction meeting for June 23. Commissioners discussed budget monitoring and confirmed Jones DeMille will oversee engineering to keep the project within the available funds.
