TIDE Committee begins review of proposed tree ordinance changes at Council request

The TIDE Committee continued its review of the town's tree ordinance on April 1 after Town Council requested a committee-level examination during the council's annual goal-setting retreat. Vice-Chair Edye Graves provided a comparison of tree-protection ordinances from eight South Carolina coastal communities and the Planning Commission's proposed amendments were circulated for member review.
In a letter to Chair Cantrell, Building Code Administrator Patrick Brown recommended that the committee prioritize two areas: discouraging the clearing of lots for new construction and establishing appropriate replacement-tree requirements. Code Enforcement Officer Morgan Viars answered members' questions and Chair Gary Cantrell asked that the Building Department attend the committee's next meeting to continue the detailed review prior to any recommendation to the Planning Commission.
