City approves contract with Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging for senior transit service

Staff recommended and the council approved a service contract with the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging (WIAAA) to provide transportation for riders aged 60 and older from October 2025 through September 2026.
Mr. Hansen said the contract will allow Galesburg Transit to track rides and bill WIAAA monthly, and that WIAAA payments will count as local match funds to maximize the Downstate Operating Assistance Program funding, which covers up to 65% of transit operating costs. "This contract... is capped at $34,008.94 in state and federal funding," he said. The contract uses a cost-per-ride model and was approved unanimously by the council.
Council discussion during the meeting and in subsequent remarks emphasized interest in improving service for seniors and the council encouraged members and staff to ride the bus to better understand transit experience and challenges.
