Commissioner Schmidt called the Town Council workshop to order at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 4, 2024, to review options for the wastewater influent screen presented by Bearing Construction representative Frank Carman. The council members in attendance were Jeremy Newnam, Michael Sullivan, Rose Potter and Walter Chase; Town Administrator Erin Braband and Town Engineer Jason Lytle were also present.
Carman outlined three options from the bidder. Option 1 is to rehabilitate the current screen by removing it, shipping it to Florida to be rebuilt, shipping it back and reinstalling it; this option was priced at $130,154 and carries a one-year warranty on mechanical items and requires bypass pumping during the work. Option 2 would replace the existing unit with a new Parkson screen at a cost of $189,451; Carman said he was unsure of the warranty on that unit and would follow up with the Town. Option 3 would install a Raketek XS screen at a cost of $145,880; the Raketek option carries a three-year warranty, according to the discussion.
Council members and staff discussed trade-offs among upfront cost, warranty length and operational disruption; the council agreed to make a selection at the regular meeting later that evening and notify Bearing Construction. The discussion centered on the specific price and warranty differences between rebuilding the existing screen and replacing it outright.
